Hamid Karzai, former president of Afghanistan, says Pakistan’s current security problems are the result of the country’s decades-long policies of supporting “extremism” and using it as a foreign policy tool against Afghanistan.
Karzai wrote on X on Tuesday, June 2, that Afghanistan is among the few countries in the region that has maintained friendly and close relations with European countries for more than a century and has consistently engaged constructively with European institutions.
While appreciating the humanitarian assistance and support provided by European countries to the people of Afghanistan, he stressed that the insecurity and ongoing challenges in Pakistan stem from the policies the country has pursued toward Afghanistan over the past four decades.
The former Afghan president also urged Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, to assess the root causes and main factors behind the region’s ongoing crises while taking existing realities into account.
Karzai added that Afghanistan and its people have been victims of terrorism shaped by Pakistan’s policies, which in recent years has caused widespread human casualties and destruction of infrastructure and public facilities across the country.
He also expressed hope for stronger relations between Afghanistan and European countries and the continuation of cooperation in various fields.
