A large fire at the Islam Qala customs facility in Herat province has been brought under control. Local sources say the customs director left the area with his wife and children when the fire broke out and did not take part in efforts to contain it.
Taliban officials in Herat’s police command also said in a statement on Wednesday evening, September 30, that the fire at Islam Qala had been completely extinguished.
Sayed Masoud Hosseini, spokesperson for the Taliban police command in Herat, said the incident caused limited financial damage.
However, videos released from the scene show the intensity and scale of the fire, with large flames and thick smoke still visible.
The Islam Qala customs facility is one of Herat’s major commercial and customs centers, with a large number of cargo vehicles and commercial goods passing through the crossing every day.
