Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Acting Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, has said that the Taliban must end gender apartheid and repeal discriminatory decrees against women and girls in Afghanistan.
Faiq said on Thursday, October 8, at the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly that the Taliban’s repressive policies neither reflect the “true teachings of Islam” nor are compatible with the values of Afghan culture.
Faiq said women and girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of education, employment, freedom of movement, and participation in public life.
He also expressed concern over the situation of journalists, human rights defenders, former officials, and former security forces, saying they face threats, detention, torture, and other human rights violations.
According to Faiq, ethnic and religious minorities, including Hazaras and Shia people, also face discrimination, insecurity, and forced displacement.
He warned that the continuation of this situation will also affect future generations of Afghanistan, with girls deprived of education and young people denied equal opportunities among those who will bear its consequences.
