New School Year Begins: Taliban Ring the School Bell in the Absence of Girls

Education Rights for Girls: A Dream Denied in the Shadow of the Taliban

The Taliban have announced a special ceremony to mark the beginning of the 1404 (Hijri year) school year in Kabul. However, the group has not provided any details regarding the reopening of girls’ schools. The Ministry of Education stated in a press release on Wednesday, March 19, that the ceremony will take place tomorrow at the Afghan-Turk Maarif Darul Ulum in Kabul.

For over three and a half years, the Taliban have barred girls above the sixth grade from attending school. During this period, the group has offered various justifications for the closure, but nearly four years later, the reopening of these schools remains uncertain.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reported that 1.5 million girls have been deprived of secondary education. UNESCO has warned that if these restrictions persist until 2030, the number of affected girls could rise to four million.
