Former U.S. President Barack Obama has criticized President Donald Trump’s war against Iran, describing it as a factor driving up “the price of just about everything.”
Al Jazeera reported early Sunday, October 25, that Obama made the remarks during an election rally in Ohio.
According to the report, Obama said Trump’s war had allowed Iran to gain control over the Strait of Hormuz and effectively exercise a form of veto power over the strategic waterway.
“Iran did not have a nuclear weapon because I had negotiated an agreement that everyone acknowledged prevented them from obtaining one. And I did not have to fire a single missile to achieve that; I only had to use diplomacy,” Obama said.
He added that Trump’s war against Iran had driven up oil and diesel prices, as well as the cost of almost everything else.
Under the 2015 agreement negotiated by the Obama administration with Iran, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment activities and accept inspections in exchange for sanctions relief.
