The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has stated that Afghanistan continues to have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
In a report released on Thursday, June 18, OCHA said that approximately 600 women die from pregnancy- and childbirth-related complications for every 100,000 women in Afghanistan.
OCHA added that women and girls are among the groups most vulnerable to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and are disproportionately affected by its consequences.
According to the report, women across Afghanistan play a vital role in delivering essential services, particularly in the health sector, and their presence is crucial for the continued provision of healthcare services.
The organization warned that restrictions on the participation of women and girls in public life and employment opportunities could weaken humanitarian response capacity and further limit women’s access to essential healthcare services.
