Youth protests across Germany have turned violent, with masked individuals throwing Molotov cocktails and police responding with water cannons.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported early Sunday, November 1, that several police officers were injured in the violence after tens of thousands of people joined demonstrations across Germany.
According to the report, the protests, inspired by similar movements in France and Italy, called on political elites to address the concerns of younger generations. Demonstrations remained largely peaceful throughout the day.
However, tensions escalated in the evening as some groups of young protesters refused to disperse, and violence broke out in major cities, including Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg.
The situation was particularly severe in Frankfurt’s financial district, where police confronted protesters throwing stones, fireworks and petrol bombs. Officers responded with water cannons and pepper spray.
The protests, which began in France, have now spread to several European countries.
