Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that health authorities are investigating two suspected Ebola cases in the country’s northeastern region.
Reuters reported on Saturday night, October 31, that the two individuals had been quarantined and officials were identifying and compiling a list of people who had been in contact with them.
According to the report, the cases remain classified as suspected, and final confirmation depends on laboratory test results.
Last week, Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in more than a decade. The case involved a Swiss woman who had travelled to Uganda and later returned to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital in the central part of the country.
If the two new cases are also confirmed, this could indicate that the disease has begun spreading within Nigeria.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in Africa, with more than 5,000 people reported dead since the outbreak was officially declared in May.
