Rangin Dadfar Spanta, former Foreign Minister and National Security Advisor of the previous Afghan government, has reacted to the suppression of public protests in Herat by the Taliban, saying that “freedom must be won.”
Writing on X on Tuesday, June 9, Spanta said, “The ruling barbarity and brutality have turned our country into a land of fear, oppression, hunger, and absolute backwardness.”
He described solidarity with the protesters in Herat as a “national and patriotic duty.”
“The people themselves must put an end to this oppression and outdated rule,” Spanta added.
The former Afghan official also emphasized that ending what he called “oppression and outdated rule” is only possible through the efforts of the people themselves.
His remarks come amid reports that residents of the Jebrail area in Herat staged protests following the detention of women by the Taliban, and that these gatherings were subsequently suppressed by the group.
