The United States is reviewing whether to reject the appointment of France’s next ambassador to Washington amid disagreements with Paris over human rights issues, Reuters reported, citing sources in the U.S. government.
The news agency reported on Wednesday, July 29 that four U.S. government sources said criticism of the United States by France’s ambassador at the United Nations in Geneva had angered senior officials in the U.S. administration.
According to the report, any move by Washington to delay or reject President Emmanuel Macron’s nominee would be highly unusual and could deepen tensions between the allies, which have recently disagreed over tariffs and the Iran conflict.
The report says tensions escalated after France’s delegation to the United Nations criticized Washington for joining Russia, North Korea, and seven other countries in voting against a proposal to extend the mandate of Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, for another four years.
