According to Reuters, thousands of Afghan migrants have returned to Afghanistan following the war and worsening economic crisis in Iran.
Reuters reported on Wednesday, September 16, that the sharp depreciation of the Iranian currency, rising prices, and unemployment were among the factors behind the migrants’ return.
According to the report, the prices of consumer goods in Iran have increased by nearly 90 percent, while food prices have risen by about 130 percent compared with last year.
Reuters wrote that many Afghan migrants had been unemployed for several months before returning, and that their average income had fallen by nearly one-third compared with before the crisis.
A Taliban official also said that 20 to 40 families voluntarily enter Afghanistan through the Islam Qala crossing every day.
Reuters spoke with migrants in the border areas of Herat and Farah, who described Iran’s economic situation as extremely difficult.
The migrants’ return comes as the Taliban have imposed widespread restrictions on women’s education, movement and employment.
