Richard Bennett, the UN Human Rights Council’s Special Rapporteur for Afghanistan, says that toxic ammunition and military activities have caused water and soil contamination that threatens the lives of citizens.
On Saturday, October 25, 2025, Bennett referred to a United Nations report on Afghanistan, stating that this is a human rights issue.
He emphasized that this problem requires documentation and accountability.
António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, called for legal measures to dispose of water and soil contamination during the 80th session of the organization’s Human Rights Council.
The report states that military activities from years past have caused environmental pollution.
Guterres noted that the toxic remnants of war include chemical ammunition, abandoned military equipment, and hazardous waste that remain in the environment for years after the end of hostilities.
This comes as Afghanistan has witnessed several decades of war, and its destructive effects have caused environmental changes.
