Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, has said that following the conclusion of the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), the organization will continue to support the country in peace, stability, human rights and sustainable development.
Guterres wrote on his X account on Saturday, October 31, that the UN would continue supporting Somalia through its country-based entities, funds and programs, in cooperation with Somali authorities and other international partners.
The UN chief praised the progress made in Somalia and commended the determination and resilience of its people despite numerous challenges.
He also expressed appreciation for everyone who served in UNTMIS and the UN’s previous missions in Somalia.
Highlighting the country’s ongoing political, security, humanitarian and development challenges, Guterres called for the international community to maintain its support for Somalia.
He stressed that continued international assistance was essential to consolidate existing gains, advance inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation, strengthen institutions and protect human rights.
