Richard Lindsay, the UK’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, has highlighted the critical role of independent media, both inside and outside Afghanistan, in amplifying the voices of the Afghan people to the world.

On Thursday, February 12, Lindsay wrote on X that during a meeting with representatives of independent Afghan media, he discussed the importance of their work and their role in strengthening freedom of expression.

He stated, “Freedom of expression is essential for building a safe, inclusive, and prosperous future for all Afghan citizens.”

The meeting comes amid increasing restrictions on media activity and freedom of expression over the past four years since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan.

Previously, the Afghanistan Journalists Center reported that since August 2024, the Taliban have officially banned the live broadcasting of images in more than 20 provinces.
