Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), has stressed that respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of all countries must be upheld without double standards.
Guterres wrote on his X account on Saturday, November 7, that the UN Charter has helped prevent the outbreak of a third world war over the past 80 years.
He said the UN Charter establishes a common rule for all countries, which includes “respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every country.”
The UN Secretary-General stressed that no exceptions should be made in applying this principle and that no country should be treated according to double standards.
Guterres said the true meaning of peace is the rule of law over power, meaning that power must be exercised within the framework of the law, not beyond it.
