The Ministry of Public Health of the Taliban has announced the launch of a polio vaccination campaign in 20 provinces of the country.
In a press release issued on Monday, May 18, the ministry stated that the second round of the supplementary national polio vaccination campaign for 2026 has started today.
According to the statement, the campaign is scheduled to last for four days, during which more than 8.3 million children will be vaccinated.
The campaign aims to prevent the spread of the polio virus among children under five years old, and efforts are being made to ensure wide vaccination coverage in high-risk areas.
Afghanistan, along with Pakistan, is one of the few countries where the disease has not yet been completely eradicated.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two positive polio cases were recorded in 2025 in the provinces of Badghis and Helmand.
