Shawn VanDiver, head of the organization Afghan Evac, has said that the killing of a U.S. National Guard soldier by an Afghan national is a tragedy and should not be exploited for political purposes.

In a post on X on Wednesday night, 10 December 2025, VanDiver wrote that the incident was a tragedy and must not be used as a political opportunity, emphasizing the need to stand firmly with allies.

He added that attention should remain focused on supporting the victims and showing solidarity with U.S. security forces, and that the event must not be misused for political aims.

This comes as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan asylum seeker, has been accused of shooting two members of the U.S. National Guard. Following the incident, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the suspension of all immigration case reviews for Afghan nationals.
