Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, has said that gender equality must be one of the main priorities of the United Nations’ development work.
Bahous made the remarks on Thursday, November 5, during the UN Global Meeting of Resident Coordinators.
She thanked resident coordinators for their efforts to improve the situation of women and girls and fulfil the UN’s commitments.
She added that gender equality must be treated as a distinct and fundamental priority on the UN’s agenda.
While gender equality remains one of the UN’s stated priorities, women and girls in Afghanistan under Taliban rule have been deprived of their most basic rights.
Restrictions on education, employment and social participation have pushed them out of much of public life.
