At least six people have been killed and 129 others are missing after a passenger ferry capsized while traveling between the Indonesian islands of Java and Borneo.
Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported early Monday, September 14, that the ferry was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members. The vessel lost contact with the shipping company on Sunday after departing from Surabaya in eastern Java.
According to the report, Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency said in its latest update that six people had died and another survivor had been found, bringing the total number of people rescued to 108.
However, maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands that relies heavily on sea transportation for daily travel and tourism.
