Local sources say the Taliban have arrested Khadija Ahmadzada, a female taekwondo coach, in the Jebrail area of Herat province.
Sources told Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, January 13, that Ahmadzada was arrested on Saturday by Taliban officials from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, along with her father, and transferred to prison.
The arrest of Khadija Ahmadzada comes as the Taliban have banned women’s participation in sports across Afghanistan.
Sports centers and clubs have been closed to girls, and continuing education and athletic training for them has been prohibited.
Local sources describe her detention as another example of the systematic repression of women in Afghanistan and warn that restrictions on women’s sporting and educational activities continue unabated.
