Sources in Kandahar say the Taliban have begun constructing tunnels in border areas across several provinces following Pakistani attacks.

Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Sunday, October 11, that the Taliban began tunnel construction over the past eight days in border areas of Spin Boldak in Kandahar, as well as Paktia, Paktika, Zabul and Helmand provinces.

According to the sources, the Taliban intend to use the tunnels as shelters to protect their forces in the event of possible clashes with Pakistan.

The sources added that the Taliban have transferred dozens of unemployed workers to border areas to take part in the tunnel construction.

Earlier, a source in Kandahar said the Taliban had recruited 1,000 new fighters from the region to strengthen their forces in border areas.
