A Syrian court has issued a death sentence in absentia against Bashar al-Assad, the country’s ousted president.
Agence France-Presse reported late Tuesday, August 11, that the court sentenced Bashar al-Assad to death over what it described as crimes committed during the Syrian civil war.
According to the report, the death sentence against Assad is the first such ruling since the establishment of Syria’s interim government.
During the Syrian civil war, Bashar al-Assad was accused by the United Nations and several countries of committing crimes against civilians, using chemical weapons and suppressing protesters.
However, as the government led by Assad was collapsing, he fled to Moscow and has not appeared in the media for the past two years.
