Abdul Rahman Tayebi, Deputy Minister for Arts and Culture at the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture, has discussed signing a joint memorandum of understanding with Ajmal Maiwandi, head of the Aga Khan Foundation, to protect the Minaret of Jam in Ghor Province.
Bokhtar News Agency, controlled by the Taliban, reported on Wednesday, August 12, that the two sides discussed ways to expand cooperation on the protection, restoration, and structural stabilization of the Minaret of Jam.
Ajmal Maiwandi said the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) had sent an official letter to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding the protection and restoration of the Minaret of Jam.
He added that he was working to ensure that restoration and reconstruction work on the historic monument would begin as soon as possible, in coordination with the Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture.
Abdul Rahman Tayebi asked the Aga Khan Trust for Culture to also cooperate in restoring other historic monuments in Afghanistan.
