Local sources say that the Taliban are building a madrasa, a mosque and a library on a 700-jerib plot of land in Kandahar city that had been allocated under the previous government for the construction of government offices and public facilities.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Saturday, October 31, that Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban Supreme Leader, had cancelled the previous government’s plan for the land and ordered the construction of a religious madrasa there.
According to the sources, the land had previously been designated for government offices, a well-equipped hospital, recreational facilities and a green space.
The sources added that documents and records related to the previous government’s development plan may still be available at the Taliban-controlled Kandahar Municipality and Directorate of Urban Development.
Meanwhile, some residents of Kandahar have called on Mullah Hibatullah on social media to reconsider his decision and allocate the land for the construction of public-benefit facilities.
A few days earlier, sources had told the Hasht-e Subh Daily that Mullah Hibatullah intended to spend 38 billion Afghanis on constructing several religious facilities in the area.
