Local sources in Kandahar say the Taliban’s ban on men sewing women’s clothing has left some tailors unemployed and worsened their economic difficulties.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Monday, October 12, that tailors had previously covered their living expenses by sewing women’s clothing, but they have lost their source of income since the ban was imposed.
The sources added that the ban has also created difficulties for families who previously had their women’s clothing made by tailors.
According to the sources, locally tailored clothing in Kandahar was previously cheaper and of better quality than imported clothing. However, families must now pay more to buy clothes.
Local sources say many families cannot afford to buy imported clothing and are calling on the Taliban to lift the ban on sewing women’s clothing so that tailors can resume their work and earn an income.
This comes as the Taliban have imposed widespread restrictions on people’s employment and individual and social freedoms over the past five years, making life increasingly difficult for citizens of the country.
