Local sources say that Taliban officials from the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Khost detained several journalists while they were covering the opening ceremony of a three-day book exhibition.
The sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Tuesday, September 8, that the journalists were detained today while filming the opening ceremony by officials from the Taliban’s Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
According to the sources, the journalists had been invited to cover the event at the request of the Taliban’s Information and Culture Directorate and the police command in Khost.
The sources added that the Taliban’s director of information and culture, director of education, and several other Taliban officials in Khost were also present at the ceremony.
There is still no information about the whereabouts or fate of the detained journalists.
The detentions come as journalists and media outlets in Afghanistan have faced widespread restrictions on media activities and access to information since the Taliban returned to power.
