Tammy Bruce, the US Deputy Representative to the United Nations, has condemned the Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls and called for their immediate end.
Bruce said on Tuesday, October 27, that the Taliban had dismantled decades of progress made by women in Afghanistan in the areas of peace and security over the past five years.
She described the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s and girls’ access to education and employment as unacceptable and called for their immediate repeal.
Bruce added that the United States remained committed to defending the human rights of women and girls and promoting their economic empowerment.
She said this commitment included supporting women’s and girls’ participation in all areas of social, civil, political and economic life.
Bruce also said that the United States supported efforts to combat violence against women and girls and defend their rights.
The UN official stressed that the United States was the largest single donor to the humanitarian system.
Bruce emphasised the particular importance of supporting women and girls during armed conflicts and natural disasters, especially those who have experienced sexual violence.
The US Deputy Representative to the United Nations also called on the organisation’s member states to translate their commitments to protecting the rights of women and girls into concrete action.
