Health sources in Kabul say that in recent weeks, several residents of the city have been taken to hospitals as a result of armed robberies, with some of them losing their lives. According to these sources, only four incidents have occurred over a little more than two weeks in Karte Char. The health sources say that two of these incidents involved knife attacks, while another was carried out by gunfire. According to the sources, two of the individuals targeted in these attacks have died.
The sources emphasize that another Kabul resident who was wounded by a bullet is currently hospitalized, and that a fourth individual who was threatened during an armed robbery was released without serious injury after handing over his money to the robbers and survived unharmed.
The sources state that the rise in such incidents has created serious concerns among citizens and health sector workers about the security situation in Kabul.
The sources stress that in the past one or two weeks alone, they have witnessed the third case of wounded individuals and victims of security incidents being transferred to hospitals in the Karte Char area of Kabul. According to one source, in one of these incidents, a man working as a security guard in one of the Karte Char apartment buildings was injured by a knife attack.
A health source said: “The victim was transferred to the hospital in extremely critical condition and was immediately placed under emergency care. Our medical team made every effort to save his life. The patient underwent surgery three times, but despite all these efforts, he unfortunately died.”
The source added: “In another incident, an individual was stabbed by robbers in an underground area, and the attackers fled after carrying out the assault. This person died moments after being transferred to the hospital.”
The health sources also add that two days ago, a money exchanger in the Karte Char area, near Sultani Tower, was targeted by armed robbers. According to the sources, the robbers intended to take the exchanger’s money, but when he resisted, they opened fire on him.
A credible source said, “The armed robbers wanted to take the exchanger’s money, but he resisted, and in response, the robbers used their weapon. As a result, two bullets hit his abdomen. The exchanger has undergone surgery, and his condition is now better.”
The source added that another money exchanger was also targeted by armed robbers, but unlike the other three incidents, the robbers took his money and released him. The source said: “In an alley leading toward a sports club, another money exchanger was stopped by armed robbers. At first, the exchanger intended to resist, but when he realized that the robbers were armed, he handed over his money to them. The robbers took about two hundred thousand afghanis from him.”
This comes as armed robbers had earlier wounded a young man while stealing his mobile phone, and the young man later died after spending several nights unconscious and in a coma in the hospital. In another incident, armed robbers killed a money exchanger on the road to the Gulran district of Herat in front of his family members and took 200,000 afghanis with them.
These concerns are being raised as the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, stated in its quarterly report that security incidents in Afghanistan under Taliban rule have increased compared to last year. According to the report, from August 1 to October 31 of the current year, the United Nations recorded 2,737 security incidents, indicating a 14.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The United Nations Secretary-General had also previously reported a seven percent increase in thefts in Afghanistan during the current Gregorian year, saying that 175 cases of theft were recorded in the country during this period. This is while the Taliban continue to claim that they have ensured nationwide security across the country.
