Turkey has nominated Feridun Sinirlioglu, the country’s former foreign minister and current secretary-general of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), for the position of United Nations secretary-general.
Anadolu Agency reported on Sunday, November 1, that Sinirlioglu’s nomination letter was submitted on Friday to the presidents of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
Sinirlioglu served as Turkey’s foreign minister from August to November 2015 and as the country’s permanent representative to the United Nations from 2016 to 2023.
His nomination comes as the latest UN Security Council vote, held on Friday, ended without a decisive result, leaving the process of selecting the organization’s next secretary-general uncertain.
The term of current UN Secretary-General António Guterres ends on December 31.
