The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned that millions of people in Afghanistan will face harsh conditions and extreme cold as winter approaches.
In a report released on Friday, October 30, the agency said that around 4.2 million people in Afghanistan will need shelter in 2026.
According to UNHCR, nearly one-third of the families surveyed also lack adequate clothing for the winter season.
According to UN figures, nearly four million people returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan between January 2025 and July 2026.
UNHCR added that many returning families lack basic necessities and assistance.
The agency said these families are often forced to choose between buying food, heating their homes and accessing healthcare services.
