The United Nations says girls around the world are challenging barriers and restrictions as they strive to achieve their dreams.

In a message on Sunday, October 11, marking the International Day of the Girl, the organization called for support to help girls shape their futures.

The UN said girls face obstacles including denial of education, forced marriage and gender-based violence.

Despite these challenges, the organization added, girls continue to work toward achieving their dreams.

In 2011, the UN General Assembly declared October 11 the International Day of the Girl. The day was first observed in 2012.
