The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says that by improving irrigation systems, clearing agricultural land of mines, and supporting local businesses, it has helped families in Kunduz strengthen their livelihoods and create economic opportunities.
The programme said on Wednesday, September 30, that developing local infrastructure, increasing employment opportunities and preparing agricultural land can help local communities cope with the sudden increase in the number of returnees.
The programme has been implemented in Kunduz in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), with support from Japan and the United Nations Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (UN-STFA).
Improving irrigation infrastructure and supporting local businesses have increased household incomes and created new opportunities for them.
