The United Nations has said that smart cities must be built around people’s needs ahead of World Cities Day.

In a statement on Wednesday, October 28, the organization said urban renewal should help ensure adequate housing for everyone.

The UN added that world leaders and representatives of local communities will gather in Fuzhou, China, from October 31 to November 2 to examine the role of urban renewal in providing adequate housing.

World Cities Day is observed annually on October 31.

This year, the day will be marked in China under the theme “Urban Renewal: Housing for All.”

The event will focus on how urban renewal can provide adequate housing, create inclusive and climate-resilient neighborhoods, and encourage public participation in rebuilding urban areas.

The ceremony will also host the fourth edition of the Global Award for Sustainable Development in Cities, known as the Shanghai Award.
