The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), marking the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, has said that climate change disproportionately affects the world’s poorest people.
In a post on X on Wednesday, June 17, UNESCO stated that desertification and drought are global challenges that impact all regions of the world.
June 17 was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994 as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
UNESCO said that through its Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) and its Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, it provides scientific expertise to help address drought and desertification.
The international organization added that desertification refers to land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas.
This comes as Afghanistan, one of the world’s poorest countries, is being severely affected by drought and climate change and is facing water shortages, particularly in Kabul and several other regions.
