The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says that awareness and vaccination programs have been expanded in Herat province to prevent the spread of polio.
UNICEF wrote on its X page on Monday, June 8, that in cooperation with a partner organization, awareness teams are active in Herat to encourage families to vaccinate their children against polio.
The UN agency said that polio has no cure, but it can be prevented through vaccination, and every child must be protected against it.
UNICEF emphasized that efforts to eradicate polio in Afghanistan are ongoing, and cooperation from families is important in this process.
It added that many remote and underprivileged areas in Afghanistan remain at risk of polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
