The World Health Organization (WHO) says limited awareness of treatment services, difficulties overcoming long-term dependence, and social stigma are among the main barriers preventing people with addiction from accessing treatment.

On Monday, October 26, the organization reported that many people with drug use disorders are unable to access health services easily because of these barriers, despite needing treatment.

To help these individuals, the WHO highlighted the work of mobile outreach and social support teams that identify people in need and refer them to treatment centres.

According to the organization, treatment services include counselling, medical follow-ups, and psychosocial support, which can help people on their path to recovery and rebuilding their lives.

The WHO representative in Afghanistan stressed that all people with drug dependence should have access to high-quality, evidence-based care.

The organization added that sustained investment in treatment services and social support is essential to help more people and families in Afghanistan.
