Speaking at a press conference on Monday, October 12, Baghaei said claims that Iran had agreed to hand over part of its territory to Afghanistan had no factual basis.
He said the issue’s coverage in the media and on social media resulted from a misinterpretation of remarks made by an Iranian parliament member.
Baghaei added that the discussion concerned helping landlocked countries gain access to ports and international waters through regional cooperation. He said similar initiatives were being implemented in different parts of the world.
He stressed that no formal proposal on the matter had been made to Afghanistan and that the issue had only been mentioned on the sidelines of a meeting.
“This issue was raised on the sidelines of one of the official meetings attended by a minister in Afghanistan, and we announced that we would review it,” he said.
The remarks come after reports that more than 110 hectares of land at Chabahar Port would be allocated to Afghanistan sparked reactions on Iranian social media. The claim had been made earlier by Mohsen Zanganeh, a member of Iran’s parliament.
