Canada’s mission to the United Nations has announced that it convened a meeting of the “Friends of Afghanistan Group” with the aim of reviewing the situation in Afghanistan.
The mission reported on Saturday, June 6, that the meeting addressed the political, economic, humanitarian, and human rights situation in Afghanistan.
According to the report, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were also present at the meeting to assess conditions in the country.
Canada’s mission to the United Nations did not release further details on the outcomes of the meeting, but stated that evaluating developments in Afghanistan and supporting the people of the country were among the main topics of discussion.
The meeting was held at a time when Afghanistan is facing severe and crisis-level conditions across human rights, economic, political, social, and cultural dimensions.
The United Nations had previously issued warnings about the situation in Afghanistan, stating that a large portion of the country’s population was living in crisis conditions and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
