Representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have expressed concern over the increase in malnutrition among mothers and children in Afghanistan, emphasizing the need to expand support for families.

The remarks were made on Sunday, 2 August 2026, during a meeting held on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week.

At the meeting, representatives of the international organizations said that despite the importance of breastfeeding, many mothers in Afghanistan face serious challenges in feeding their infants due to a lack of awareness, limited access to counselling services, and economic difficulties.

They warned that malnutrition can seriously affect children’s physical and mental development and stressed the need to implement support programmes and strengthen nutrition services for mothers and children across Afghanistan.
