Civil society activists in Germany and citizens of Afghanistan living in the country staged protests in several German cities and at airports against the forced deportation of asylum seekers, calling for deportations to Afghanistan to be halted.
The organisers of the protests said in a statement published on Saturday, October 24, that demonstrations had been held in Frankfurt, Munich, Leipzig, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Berlin.
The protesters opposed the expansion of deportation centres and migrant detention facilities, as well as the German government’s cooperation with third countries to deport asylum seekers.
At Leipzig Airport, they specifically called for an end to the deportation of asylum seekers to Afghanistan, warning that returning people to a country where they face the risk of persecution and human rights violations threatens their safety.
The protesters also called for an end to the German government’s cooperation with the Taliban on the deportation of asylum seekers and urged the authorities to defend the right to asylum.
