Sources say that a young graduate of the Faculty of Engineering in Kabul, who set himself on fire yesterday, died in the hospital today.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, that the young man had taken his own life due to poverty, economic hardship, and unemployment.
According to the sources, the man was the father of three daughters, and his family continues to face severe economic difficulties.
Sources added that the young man had set himself on fire yesterday on one of the public roads in Kabul city.
This comes as unemployment in Afghanistan has reached unprecedented levels over the past five years following the Taliban’s takeover, while poverty across the country has increased significantly.
The United Nations (UN) had also previously announced that more than 13 million people in Afghanistan do not have access to sufficient food and are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
