Yemen’s Health Ministry has warned of a worsening health and humanitarian crisis in the southwestern city of Taiz.
Al Jazeera reported early Thursday, October 29, that the ministry had called for an end to the Houthi blockade of Taiz as humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate.
According to the ministry’s statement, 246,711 people in Taiz, including more than 186,000 children under the age of five and around 23,000 pregnant women, have lost access to essential healthcare services.
The statement added: “The ministry calls on the United Nations, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the International Committee of the Red Cross and donor organizations to ensure the continuous and safe delivery of medicines, fuel, oxygen and medical equipment to Taiz.”
Meanwhile, fighting over control of Taiz has continued for several weeks between the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognized government forces.
