The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) have emphasized the establishment of an inclusive government in Afghanistan and expressed concern over the human rights situation and the ongoing crisis.
The European Union, on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, issued a joint statement at the 25th meeting of EU and ASEAN foreign ministers, stressing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all citizens of Afghanistan.
The statement reads in part: “We emphasized the importance of forming an inclusive and fully representative government, one that is based on the rule of law, respect for human rights, and fundamental freedoms of all people residing in Afghanistan.”
The joint statement of these countries also stressed the unconditional access to humanitarian assistance for all people in all parts of Afghanistan.
The meeting also referred to the ongoing tensions in the country and called on all parties to exercise restraint and work to reduce tensions.
ASEAN and EU members called for the continuation of international humanitarian assistance to address the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan and stressed their support for this process.
