Naseer Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan’s acting permanent representative to the United Nations, says no credible reconciliation is possible in the country without the participation of half of Afghanistan’s population in the political process.
Faiq made the remarks on Tuesday, September 22, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, at a meeting titled “Women, Peace, Justice and National Reconciliation in Afghanistan.”
He said women’s participation must be direct, meaningful, and part of Afghanistan’s main political process.
Faiq added that Afghan women are not only victims but also political stakeholders and leaders of the country.
According to Faiq, sustainable peace in Afghanistan is not possible without justice and accountability.
He stressed that the future of Afghanistan must ultimately be determined by the people of the country.
Faiq also said the Taliban are not the only stakeholders in Afghanistan and cannot solely represent the diversity and aspirations of the Afghan people.
