António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has stated that 85% of crimes committed against journalists go uninvestigated and unpunished.
Guterres said in a statement released on Sunday, May 3, marking World Press Freedom Day, that journalists around the world face serious risks, including censorship, surveillance, legal pressure, and even death threats.
He added that in recent years, the number of journalists killed, particularly in conflict zones, has increased, and many of these victims were deliberately targeted.
The UN Secretary-General also warned that economic pressures, new technologies, and the manipulation of information can severely undermine press freedom and weaken access to reliable information.
He emphasized that the weakening of journalism leads to increased distrust, reduced social cohesion, and makes it more difficult to prevent and resolve crises.
