Local sources in Herat say that internet access in the city has been “temporarily” cut off.
On Monday, September 22, local sources confirmed to the Hasht-e Subh Daily that internet speed initially slowed down and was then fully disconnected a short while ago.
According to these sources, the internet in Herat may be restored tomorrow at 8 a.m., but the reconnection will not include fiber-optic lines.
It is also reported that internet services provided by the mobile networks Roshan and Etisalat will be temporarily suspended.
This comes as the Taliban Supreme Leader has banned the use of fiber-optic internet in Afghanistan, citing the need to “prevent immoral acts.”
So far, fiber-optic services have been shut down in several provinces, including Herat, Balkh, Helmand, Kunduz, Takhar, Badakhshan, and Kandahar.
This move by the Taliban has sparked strong reactions from Afghanistan’s citizens. Many users have stressed that cutting internet access not only disrupts people’s daily lives but also severely damages the economy and education.
