Local sources say a large fire has broken out at the Islam Qala customs facility in Herat province, setting fire to and causing explosions involving large fuel and gas tankers.
Sources told the Hasht-e Subh Daily on Wednesday evening, September 30, that the fire was still burning and had not yet been brought under control due to its scale.
Videos released from the scene show the intensity and scale of the incident, with large flames and thick smoke visible.
Sources say no efforts have so far been made to extinguish the fire and that, given its scale, assistance from Iran may be needed to contain it.
Returnees from Iran are also present at the Islam Qala border crossing. According to sources, the fire has left these people in difficult conditions.
No further details have so far been released about the cause of the fire or possible casualties.
