An oil spill from the stranded tanker Caroline Buzangi off the coast of Oman has spread across nearly 150 square kilometers.
Al Jazeera Media Network reported early Wednesday, August 5, that satellite imagery showed a significant expansion of the oil spill from the tanker.
According to the report, the oil has reached parts of Qibliyah Island, a protected marine area that is home to endangered seabirds and the Arabian Sea humpback whale.
The tanker, which is estimated to have been carrying more than 800,000 barrels of crude oil, has been stranded since June.
Environmental experts have warned that the vessel may be sinking deeper into the water, with no signs of an operation to prevent the oil spill.
