Pakistan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has said that terrorist groups have continued to expand their presence in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power.
Dawn reported early Thursday, August 6, that Ahmad made the remarks during a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
According to the report, Ahmad described the situation in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan as grave and deeply concerning.
He said several terrorist groups continue to operate from safe havens inside Afghanistan, posing an increasing threat to regional security.
The report said Ahmad specifically identified Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), the Islamic State (IS) and its affiliated groups, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), and al-Qaeda affiliates as organizations with access to safe havens inside Afghanistan.
