Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed regional issues on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
Tasnim reported on Tuesday, September 1, that the two presidents held a brief conversation on the sidelines of the summit.
China, a major global economic power, is a key partner and major buyer of Iranian oil, having continued to purchase oil from Tehran despite stringent US sanctions.
China and Iran have also signed a 25-year strategic agreement, and relations between the two countries have expanded across various fields.
This comes as the United States has launched new sanctions against Iran under what it calls “Operation Economic Outcast” and has urged countries to join the campaign against Iran.
However, China has said in response to the sanctions that it will defend its interests, stressing that imposing such sanctions is not a solution to the six-month-long war between Iran and the United States.
